Paris MoU Concerned About Poor Boat Drills

February 03, 2010

February 3, 2010 - St. John's, NL - Recently the Paris MoU on Port State Control released their findings from a Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC). The campaign was focused on lifeboat launching arrangements and was conducted with assistance from the Tokyo MoU. Over the course of the CIS 5749 inspections were undertaken. With critical points of SOLAS Chaper III, ISM, and the LSA Code requirements being verified. Early results from this campaign show that one out of every five inspections revealed CIC-related deficiencies. Also during the course of the 3 month campaign 246 ships were detained, with 30% of the detaining being CIC related. In addition to the physical attributes of the ship being unstaisfactory, when drills were conducted one out of every eight was not satisfactory. The Paris MoU member states believe this is an issue of serious concern, and is a result of insufficient training.
